Over the past few years, e-commerce has led to the creation of new task areas, processes and business models with their own ways of working and sequences which were not covered by the established commercial occupations. This made it necessary to introduce a new occupation to provide training for tasks in the area of e-commerce. This profile presents the tasks, development opportunities and figures for this new occupation which entered into force in 2018.
The seeking and selection of suitable continuing training provision may constitute a challenge for persons interested in pursuing such training. AI allows the providers of continuing training databases to develop innovative search systems and more convenient user interfaces. These systems are able to take on a virtual assistance role via the integration of additional functions such as determination of current status of knowledge or the visualisation of results.
Heat provision is about to change radically. From 2024 onwards, at least 65 percent of the energy used by future heating systems will need to come from renewable sources. Gas and oil-fired systems are on the way out. Heating engineering, the gas grid and occupations relating to improving the energy efficiency of buildings will all play a key part in this shift. There are many ways of generating internal heating in a way which lessens its carbon footprint. This article offers a more detailed presentation of heat pumps and of hydrogen combustion in heating systems and also considers possible implications for occupational profiles and for the tasks performed by skilled workers.
The hospitality sector was badly shaken up during the coronavirus pandemic. Modernisation of the hotel occupations thus occurred at the right time. The training occupation of hotel management clerk addresses many of the changes that have taken place in the sector and now offers business management aspects and further main focuses in the areas of HR and commercial management.
The metal working and electrical occupations were updated in 2018 with the aim of countering the pressure to adapt that is particularly affecting these occupational profiles in the wake of the digital transformation. The objective was to use standard instruments to drive forward flexibilisation. This article highlights the degree of success achieved in this regard and examines the conclusions which may be drawn for training in the metal working and electrical occupations and for further regulatory work. It also makes reference to a BIBB evaluation and presents results from regional workshops.
This article investigates the issue of the extent to which migrants in Canada and Germany are able to use the qualifications and professional experiences they have acquired abroad on the domestic labour market. The information presented is based on case studies in the healthcare sector conducted in both countries. A related question is how the recognition process and the significance of occupational experience differ in the two countries and how these two aspects are determined. The results provide indications as to whether and in which ways the integration of foreign skilled workers in Germany and Canada can be improved.

BIBB has been investigating whether the four dual IT occupations, which have remained unchanged since 1997, need to be modernised. Against the background of the increasing digitalisation of the world of work, the aims of this process were to identify current and foreseeable requirements for skilled IT staff and to draw up proposals for the future shaping of the IT oc-cupations. This article presents selected outcomes of the investigation and uses this to arrive at conclusions with regard to a possible rearrangement of IT occupations.
Young people continue to have gender-specific ideas regarding their professional future. This also applies to pupils who participated in a pilot project at the Schkopau Polytechnic Centre (PTZ). Besides influences on their career aspirations which originate from group behaviour and from the parental home, experiences with their own practical work also have a role to play when facing up to the world of occupations. However, results presented in the article indicate that this essentially achieves very little in creating a fresh perspective – for example, a stronger interest among girls in technical occupations.

On August 1, 2014 the revised regulation for initial vocational training in office management enters force. The three previous training occupations of office clerk, clerk and specialist in office communication are merged under the new designation of Office Management Clerk (Kaufmann/Kauffrau für Büromanagement). German industry, commerce, the skilled crafts and the public services now have at their disposal a training occupation that will be one of the largest, accounting for over 80,000 training contracts. The article sets out the innovations in structure and content and the challenges of developing the occupation.
